Wounded - Gaspare Traverse. 101x128

Gaspare Traversi (1732-1769) - one of the most original and subtle Neapolitan artists of the XVII century. He was a good psychologist and storyteller, so his compositions are filled with various nuances of human experiences. The painter worked on religious compositions: scenes from the life of Mary in the church of Santa Maria del Ayuto in Naples in 1749, the Old Testament scenes in the church of San Paolo Fuori de Mura in Rome in 1752 and others. The artist lived in the Italian capital since 1750. According to the testament of Italian art historian Roberto Longa, in the genre paintings from the daily life of Traversi, he followed the character of dramaturgy with the real characters of the Neapolitan comedian B. di Linereri, who was extremely popular until the Venetian Carlo Goldoni gained access to the theater.

"Wounded" - A good example for understanding the style of a painter in such compositions. The action takes place seriously: the wounded person really suffers, a dear lady and other family members (perhaps father and mother) sympathize with him, remaining in the background, the dapper doctor is trying to help, and the pharmacist is already preparing the healing drug. Entirely filled space nevertheless boldly highlights from below from the shadow a dense “knot” of three figures in the foreground. However, the situation itself is written and compositionally shown to the viewer in such a way that the ironic background of the author’s intention is immediately revealed - both by the bird’s expression on the face of the doctor and the forced pose of the sufferer. It is hard to believe in the simplicity of the artist as a painter.
