World fame Dresden Art Gallery based on one of the largest collections of world painting masterpieces. Better examples of Italian Renaissance painting - Titian, Botticelli, Raphael, Veronese, Correggio are collected in its halls. No less important is the collection of Dutch and Flemish painters of the XIV century. With a large number of works by Rembrandt and his students, here you can see the works of Rubens, Van Dyck, Jordaens. There are several works of German, Spanish and French ancient artists, among them - Dürer, Velazquez, Holbein, Murillo, Lorrain and others.

The gallery of old masters is nothing more than a Dresden art gallery

The gallery was founded in 1560 by the German elector August Saxon, but its main funds began to replenish most of all since the middle of the XVIII century. In 1754, the most famous world masterpieces of Italian painting were acquired, among them - the Sistine Madonna Raphael, the Virgin and Child with Lorenzo di Credi and the Life of St. Zinovy Botticelli. A whole army of agents (which included artists, diplomats, courtiers) searched all over Europe for works of art for this gallery at the Saxon court. At this time, the works of Vermeer, Frans Hals, Rubens, Tintoretto were acquired. Gradually, Dresden gains the status of a world treasury of art by old masters.

Great damage to the gallery funds caused the war years of the XX century. Of more than 2,000 pieces of art, no more than a quarter survived - several hundred paintings died or disappeared without a trace, about a thousand were taken out of Germany as trophies and only after many years were partially returned.

In the 80s of the last century, the premises of the Dresden Gallery were restored, created the most modern conditions for storing paintings and the convenience of displaying them to visitors. Unlike other museums, the Dresden Gallery tries to avoid innovation and preserves the historical type of hanging paintings in antique frames darkened with time. From 2 to 3 million people visit the gallery annually, which allows us to consider it the most popular museum in Germany, famous throughout the world.
